2008 Meetings

Use and Improve Local Transport   Julie Archer, Manager of Dore Community Transport, spoke at our October 9th GVEG meeting.  Several Parish Councillors also attended and contributed to the discussion concerning the importance of parish plans and their need to address local transport as a priority.  Click here to read the Minutes

GVEG Green Supper The Golden Valley Environment Group hosted a Green Supper with a Self-Sufficiency "Flavour" on 18th September in Vowchurch Village Hall.  What a great venue! Everyone brought a dish of food to share, made from home-grown or locally produced ingredients.  The food did not disappoint!   The result was a delicious buffet supper, produced with a minimum of food miles!  After the meal, Dave Williams from Golden Valley Apiaries spoke on Beekeeping.  Bees are critical in our production of food.  He discussed on-going "challenges" with Varroa disease and the resulting lack of honey production which has been going on for quite some time.  Workshops are available regularly and it is something to consider!  Keeping Bees can be interesting and fun!  Manu and Edi also gave an update on their Community Supported Agriculture Project at Rainbow View.  After one season, they have proved that they can grow fresh, organic fruit and vegetables with reduced food miles much, much cheaper than what it would cost to shop at the big commercial grocery stores.  What a positive note!

ECOPSYCHOLOGY,
what an interesting talk!   Anu van Warmelo of Blitz Café lead the discussion on the psychological challenges of today.  He held our attention for the entire GVEG meeting on Thursday, 19th June.   If you would like to get in touch with Anu, please  go to the Blitz Cafe Website.

Agriculture, it is a changin',
as discussed by David Morgan, President of NFU, at our April 24th GVEG meeting.

We dined with the Local Parish Council!  Our second GVEG Green Supper  was held at Vowchurch and Turnastone Memorial Hall, on Thursday, 20th March 2008.  GVEG members brought a dish of food or drink to share, made mainly from home-grown or locally produced ingredients.  The evening provided an opportunity for GVEG members to meet Parish Councillors, exchange ideas about how the Councils work and how the GVEG can support their work. The Parish Councillors each spoke briefly on the current status of their individual parish plans.   To read the minutes, just follow this link.

What is a Carbon Footprint?  How big are your "Carbon Feet"?  How does this effect you?  Dr Ashley Tucker, Senior Gateway Editor from the Herefordshire Council spoke at our GVEG meeting in January.   The Council has developed a Carbon Calculator on their website which calculates individual carbon usage.  Please click on this link  Calculate Your Footprint  and complete the survey.  Your input will help the Council compile an average for each parish.

Here are some Herefordshire village statistics based on individual households who have entered their carbon details into the Carbon Calculator.
NB:  The carbon footprint for each village will be more accurate, if more individuals complete the Carbon Calculator Survey.  Here is a sample of a few graphs to date.
